Propeller Hazards Don't
Disappear When the Engine Stops

Aircraft props remain one of the most dangerous hazards within maintenance facilities. During repairs and routine maintenance such as compression tests, accidental body contact can result in devastating injuries.

Even experienced A&P’s can become distracted or complacent in busy work environments. That’s why additional safety measures are becoming increasingly important.

THE ISSUES:

â—‰ THE COMPRESSION CHECK- (required to be done at least once a year)- Putting 80 psi into a cylinder with the piston near TDC creates a potential kickback situation.

â—‰ THE HOT MAG- Sometimes a brittle P-lead wire can detach or break, leaving a hot mag, and of course, a hot prop.

â—‰ THE IGNITION KEY INADVERTENTLY SWITCHED TO LEFT MAG, RIGHT MAG, OR BOTH- This can lead to obvious trouble.

â—‰ THE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH- Small aircraft ignition switches get dirty and can have contaminated internal contacts, or develop extensive wear, which can lead to a hot prop.

â—‰ LESS SEVERE, IS THE ALL-TOO-COMMON MISTAKE OF WALKING INTO A PROPELLER BLADE TIP, TAKING A GOUGE TO THE HEAD- The tips are very thin and sometimes quite sharp, which makes them difficult to see when working around or walking around an airplane. Having AERO-PROP-GUARDâ„¢ installed on all shop aircraft increases tip visibility with their bright color and bulbous appearance.

*Remember- always assume the mags are hot, and never allow any part of the body to extend into the propeller blade path area
